Wanda and Pietro have always been different, and the villagers they grew up around never liked or trusted them. So the twins have always been on the move, looking for a safe place for themselves. Their story almost ends in tragedy when a family that takes the twins in discovers Wanda’s magical powers and threatens to burn her at the stake.

Luckily, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are saved, but their salvation comes with strings attached. The person who rescues them is Magneto—the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, which opposes the X-Men and the Avengers. Owing him their lives, the twins fight alongside the Brotherhood for a while. In the end, however, Wanda’s and Pietro’s true characters come through, and they leave, not allowing Magneto to use them to kill others.

Just the two of them again, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver make a huge decision: to join the Avengers! Among their peers and no longer on the run, the two grow more independent, but their ties to each other remain strong. Over the years, as Wanda’s mental health deteriorates, Quicksilver becomes more protective of his sister, sometimes with unintended consequences.

Although they don’t always see eye to eye, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver retain a strong link and are always ready to save each other.
