The events of Marvel’s Civil War begin with a tragedy. The New Warriors, a group of young Super Heroes, are filming a reality TV show where they take on Super Villains. They bite off more than they can chew, however, as the villains are far more powerful than they expected. One of the villains is Nitro, who uses his powers to trigger an explosion that kills over 600 civilians, including 60 schoolchildren.

This catastrophe forces the government to take action. The Superhuman Registration Act is proposed, requiring heroes to register their identities and operate under S.H.I.E.L.D., accountable to the taxpayers and under government control. Understanding the public’s concern, and perhaps burdened by guilt, some Super Heroes support the proposal and rally behind Tony Stark. Others fear revealing their identities and surrendering their freedom, forming a resistance that goes underground, led by Captain America.

Tony Stark’s team begins using harsher methods to convince others to register or to capture those who refuse. They even create a prison, clone Thor, and recruit the Thunderbolts. Though the two sides do not see each other as true enemies and try to avoid bloodshed, everything changes when the Thor clone kills Goliath. Spider-Man reveals his true identity, only to defect to Captain America’s side later. Sue Richards leaves her husband, Reed Richards, and joins the underground movement, while many other heroes reluctantly side with Tony.

The conflict builds to a massive showdown in Lower Manhattan, where the two teams finally clash. As Captain America’s side gains the upper hand, their leader makes a choice to surrender. He realizes they might have won the fight but they have lost the argument. Looking around, Cap understands that civilians have once again paid the price.

In the aftermath, Tony Stark creates a team of registered heroes for every state and becomes the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. It is not an easy job, and harder still will be mending the fractures left in the Super Hero community.

Första vykortet från Arc Reactor

Efter dagens ossanolika mängd steg, fick jag det första vykortet från Avengers – Arc Reactor utmaningen.

Anthony Stark is a billionaire, a playboy, and genius inventor. He appears to have everything a man could desire and the power to get whatever he doesn’t. But his fortunes are about to change. While on a trip to demonstrate one of his new weapons in the jungles of Vietnam, he trips a wire and sets off a booby trap bomb.

When he wakes, our hero is in the hands of enemies and, worse, his brilliant mind has become their prize. Not only has Tony been wounded by the blast, but in a few days, shrapnel from the bomb will reach his heart and kill him. Wong-Chu, a ruthless warlord, promises his surgeon will save Tony’s life if Tony builds him a weapon.

Tony begins to work alongside the brilliant Professor Ho Yinsen. What Wong-Chu believes to be a new tool for his army is, in truth, a formidable suit of armor. This first creation, later known as the Mark I, not only keeps the shrapnel from reaching Tony’s heart but is powerful enough to take on Wong-Chu and his entire army.

Pushed by necessity, courage, and the will to survive, this is the beginning of an iconic Super Hero and a complicated man.

Sista vykortet & comic

Då var det endast 1.5 km kvar på denna utmaning och de sista utmärkelserna kom på morgonen.

Steve receives reports of a scientist who is doing research into the Super-Soldier Serum that changed his life long ago. Jacob Erskine, grandson of Professor Erskine, seems to have reignited his grandfather’s research and is now looking to sell it to foreign agents.

With this information in hand, Super-Soldier infiltrates a gala organized by Jacob and discovers more than one suspicious thing. First of all, his guards seem to have been given the serum, but they are unstable. Second, and perhaps more curious, Jacob’s wife is the spitting image of Cynthia Glass, Steve’s lover from WWII, who sacrificed her life for him. Things don’t become clearer even when Steve and Erskine come face to face. The scientist tells Super-Soldier that he has been doing research into the serum, but he is looking at curing cancer. When faced with allegations of selling it to nefarious agents, Erskine hints at a corporate takeover orchestrated by his head of security. Before they can finish their conversation, Erskine collapses. He has been shot by a sniper! His last words ring in Steve’s ears: “Protect my wife.”

With this information, Steve follows Anita Erskine to her beach house, where he finds the unsettling truth: This is all Machinesmith’s plan! Anita is nothing but an android created to attract Steve. Before he can react, Machinesmith activates a device that neutralizes Steve Rogers’s Super-Soldier Serum, rendering him just as frail as he was all those years ago before joining the army!

The Super Hero might not have the serum or Captain America costume, but he still has all the training and skills he honed over the years, and he uses them to escape. Next, he gains the trust of Anita, who knows how to reactivate the serum and where to find Machinesmith.

After he regains his superhuman strength, Steve crashes the auction where Machinesmith is trying to sell the Super-Soldier Serum to terrorists from around the world. The Super Villain is particularly hard to defeat because his consciousness can jump from device to device in an instant. After all devices have been destroyed or disconnected, Machinesmith makes a final jump: into Anita! Just as Cynthia sacrificed herself many years ago, so does Anita, changing her programming to trap and destroy Machinesmith.

Machinesmith’s plans seem to have been spoiled, but after inspecting the Super-Soldier Serum, Steve Rogers realizes it is a useless counterfeit, making him think there is more to this plan than he was led to believe. . . .

Avengers Postcard

Efter dagens steg, fick jag både ett vykort, samt en collectible från Avengers Super Soldier utmaningen

Captain America is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and is facing three major crises at the same time: The Chitauri are invading, Super Villains are attacking Manhattan, and Hydra forces have invaded Sokovia, thus gaining control of seven nuclear bombs.

Captain Marvel, alongside the Ultimates, Quasar, and other Super Heroes, are beating back the Chitauri forces in space while the Earth’s defense shield is being repaired. Downtown, Cloak and Dagger, the Defenders, and Doctor Strange are fighting the Super Villains while the S.H.I.E.L.D. fleet is intercepting Hydra forces.

Soon enough, everyone realizes that they have been deceived and separated from one another. A dome of darkness descends over New York, trapping the Super Heroes inside, and those fighting above Earth realize that the now functioning global shield is stopping them from returning. Everything becomes clear when Captain America orders his forces not to open fire on Hydra. Led by Steve Rogers, Hydra has won.

The new authoritarian regime is based on the idea that the strongest should rule, and every citizen is encouraged to spy on their neighbors, colleagues, and friends and report any anti-Hydra activity.

But the Super Hero community is not about to give up. Some of them start working underground and are told by Rick Jones that a Cosmic Cube was used to rewrite Steve Rogers’s past and turn him into a Hydra agent. They also learn that the cube was shattered but they can put it back together and use it to set reality right again. They engage in a cat-and-mouse chase but are outsmarted by Hydra, who collect all but one of the fragments.

Meanwhile, the team in space is fighting back attack after attack by the Chitauri, and the Super Heroes in New York are eking out a living in the darkness. While the Underground searches for cube shards, Natasha Romanoff, alongside a ragtag team of young Super Heroes named the Red Room, sets out to kill Captain America.

All seems lost when Natasha’s plan ends with her death and Steve Rogers harnesses the power of all but one cube shard into a suit of armor, making him as powerful as a god.

The Super Heroes don’t give up. Taking up the Captain America mantle, Sam Wilson uses the cube shard in their possession to switch off the planetary defense shield and dispel the darkness from New York. After that, however, under the stupefied gaze of everyone, he presents the shard to Steve Rogers. Steve adds the shard to his armor but soon doubles over.

What actually happened is that Ant-Man shrank Bucky Barnes so he could enter the Cosmic Cube and find Kobik and the unaltered Steve Rogers, whom he brought back to confront Hydra-influenced Steve Rogers.

Kobik rewrites reality, undoing everything Hydra has done, while the two versions of Steve Rogers fight. Though they are matched in force and skill, Steve Rogers gets the upper hand and defeats Hydra Steve when he proves himself worthy of wielding Thor’s hammer.
